Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Your annual respiratory review is an important check-up to help you manage your breathing condition and keep you as well as possible throughout the year.
During the appointment, our nurse or clinician will:
π« 1. Review your symptoms
- Discuss how your breathing has been over the past year
- Talk about any flare-ups, changes in symptoms, or use of rescue medication
- Assess how your condition affects your daily activities and sleep
π 2. Review your medication
- Check your inhalers and technique to make sure youβre using them correctly
- Confirm that your prescription is up to date and effective
- Discuss any side effects or problems with your medicines
π 3. Carry out monitoring tests
Depending on your condition, this may include:
- Peak flow or spirometry (lung function test)
- Oxygen saturation (using a finger probe)
- Blood pressure and weight check if appropriate
π 4. Review your management plan
- Update your asthma or COPD action plan
- Provide advice on how to recognise and manage flare-ups early
- Discuss vaccinations (e.g. flu, pneumonia, COVID-19)
- Offer support with smoking cessation, exercise, and self-management
π 5. Plan follow-up care
Set goals for the year ahead to help you stay well.
REMINDER β it is helpful if patients attending for asthma appointments remember to bring their inhalers.
